Musical Director - Steve Thompson
Steve Thompson, an accomplished cornet player, commenced his musical career at the age of 8 with the Salvation Army band in Wellington and later performed with the Wellington Fire Brigade Band. He then pursued his passion for farming at Flock House in Bulls. Steve played for multiple bands in the North Island, including the Putaruru Brass Band, Taupo Brass Band and Rotorua Brass Band, where he held the position of principal cornet for 26 years. He was also selected to play in 3 National bands of New Zealand in 1980, 1985, and 1990. Steve's family have followed in his footsteps also, with 3 out of the 4 of his sons, and grandson playing with the Tauranga City Brass Band.
In 2010, Steve became the conductor of the Tauranga City Silver Band, which later merged with the Tauranga Brass Band. Under his leadership, the band has demonstrated significant growth and progressed from C Grade to B Grade, placing 4th at the 2023 National Contest in Dunedin.
